Lakeview Hotel, Merimbula

This is a refurbishment of an earlier Michael Marshman & Associates project.  What was the brief?

It’s not often we get to re-address a project.  In this case the previous owner had part-refurbished the hotel but the new owner required the pub to meet higher standards and as the only hotel in town, lift its image to meet ever-changing community needs and expectations.

The materials used internally give the bar a special atmosphere.  Describe the materials and their use.

The use of rusted steel sheet clad columns and beams and exposure of the rear rock/brick walls gave the bar a rustic character.  There is a lovely contrast between the new and the old as well as a direct reference to the long history of the hotel.

Has the refurbishment been successful?
What comments have you received?

Yes, the owner has quipped that the hotel is now so successful, that to accommodate all the new customers, he needs more room.  So there will be more extensions.  It’s a hip place.
